U.S. History

What History Means to Me

Goal: To encourage students to think about history as it relates to them personally, to make connections between historical events and today, and to understand how history affects them.

Introduction: Use a quotation from the video, “U.S. History Is…”  (You saw this the first day of class), as the basis of your introduction.  For example, your essay can be based on one of the following quotations:

  • “U.S. History is the nation’s memory.”
  • “U.S. History is a trip, time travel to places that are real, events that actually happened, and with people who are really amazing.”
  • “U.S. History is the last five letters of the phrase, it’ a story.”
  • “U.S. History is gossip that’s good for you.”
  • “U.S. History is a window on the past and a doorway to the future.”
  • “U.S. History is a great buffet."
Body: Describe your favorite historical event in detail.  This could be about your family, a recent event (like September 11), a historical person (favorite person in U.S. History), etc.

Conclusion: Explain how this event relates to you.

Examples: you can go to this site, “What History Means To Me…”, to read how students have answered this essay in the past.  Remember, these examples are the national winners.  Your essay will not be as long.

Essay Work Description

There are two essays due next week.  Please remember that you need a cover sheet for each essay (Type out question and page, include your name, class, and date due).  Your essay must be at least two paragraphs (I prefer three).  You should have an introduction, body (the longest part), and a conclusion.

You may pick any critical thinking question from chapters 8 and 9 (one question from each chapter).  I suggest you pick Critical Thinking question #4 on page 210 and Critical Thinking question #4 on page 227.

We will work on these Thursday and Friday before going to the lab.
