Today (3/13) students received directions about submitting elective course requests for the 2008-2009 school year. Core courses have been selected and counselors are currently beginning to check these selections. Submitting course requests is the first phase of creating the master schedule for next year. Once all students have eight course requests, that have been verified by families and counselors, we will begin the process of creating the schedule for next year. Please take time to carefully consider the appropriate course choices for your child. If you have questions about what to choose, please ask your child's guidance counselor, or his/her advisement teacher. Some course names have changed and we are offering a few new courses. We have discussed these new courses with the students and have attached our full course listing as a guide during this process.
We are excited about moving this to our portal for this year. The media center is open before and after school, and counselors are available to assist during these times. The students seem very pleased with this process. I have tried to make it very clear to the students that this is not a first come, first serve process. The link for the Campus Portal is https://campus.csdecatur.org/campus/portal/decatur.jsp If you are having trouble logging into the portal with the username and password, please go to the Registrar's office for help. Students are scheduled into appropriate core courses first and electives second. Sometimes we have more requests than teacher availability allows. When this is the case, we always give first choice to seniors, then juniors, etc. Core courses are our priority, as is ensuring our students are scheduled into courses that provide an appropriate progression towards graduation.
As questions arise please call or email. Many students have been asking questions, so of course ask them as well! Planning for the coming year is an exciting time. I was very pleased with the students' enthusiasm as we discussed this process with them. Once all requests are in, we expect to send home finalized course requests (on 3/31) for your review.
Warmly,
Lauri McKain-Fernandez Principal, Decatur High School
